Allergies: How to Prep for Pollen Season

Allergies: How to Prep for Pollen Season

Spring in Richmond means longer days, greener trees, and—if you’re like many of our patients—a big jump in sneezing, congestion, and “foggy brain” as pollen levels rise. At RVA Chiropractic & Wellness, we look at allergy season through a whole-body lens: what we can do together in the office, and what you can do at home to help your system stay as calm and resilient as possible.

How chiropractic care supports allergy season

When your spine and nervous system are moving and functioning well, your body is better able to coordinate immune responses and clear allergens efficiently instead of overreacting to every grain of pollen. Gentle chiropractic adjustments can improve sinus drainage, ease neck and upper back tension, and reduce pressure around the head and face, which many patients notice as less congestion and fewer sinus headaches. Regular wellness visits with Dr. Lisa also support better posture and deeper breathing, which are key for healthy lungs and lymphatic flow during high-pollen months.

Simple at-home steps to prepare now

Chiropractic care works best when it’s paired with small, consistent habits outside the office. Here are some ways your family can start preparing for “the pollening” before it hits full force:

  • Create a low-pollen home base: Keep windows closed on high-pollen days and use your A/C with clean or HEPA filters to reduce what’s circulating indoors. Leave shoes at the door, change clothes after yard time or playground trips, and shower before bed so pollen doesn’t end up on your pillow and bedding.
  • Support your body from the inside out: Aim for a colorful plate—berries, leafy greens, apples, onions, citrus, turmeric, and ginger all offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support that can help calm allergy-related inflammation. Stay well hydrated so mucus stays thinner and your body can clear allergens more easily.
  • Be strategic with outdoor time: Check daily pollen counts and try to plan longer outings after rain or when counts are lower, staying indoors more on dry, windy, high-pollen days. Hats, sunglasses, and (for heavy yard work) a light mask can cut down on how much pollen hits your eyes, nose, and airways.
  • Rinse and reset: A simple saline nasal rinse or neti pot once or twice a day can help wash pollen out of your nasal passages and ease congestion. Prioritizing consistent sleep, gentle movement like walking or yoga, and a few minutes of deep breathing each day supports the nervous system work we’re doing in the office.

We’re here to help you breathe easier
